On recovery, fully conscious patients not on medication can be rapidly loaded with oral phenytoin (try 18 mg/kg). c

Why?
  • Few patients have side-effects (7.8%: 95% CI: 0.46% to 15%) c
  • Phenytoin capsules or suspension are probably equally effective in loading patients who are conscious following a seizure. d
