  • painful crises
  • acute chest syndrome
  • infective episodes
  • neurological or surgical problems
Ask patients with a painful crisis about
  • where they have pain c
  • potential triggers such as cold weather, stress, exertion, alcohol, or pregnancy
Ask patients with suspected acute chest syndrome about
  • chest pain, fever, dyspnoea and coughing c  
Remember to ask about
  • fever and rigors c and any possible infection d
  • abdominal pain c
  • priapism c  
Look for
  • chest signs c
  • signs of infection d
  • focal neurological signs d
  • an acute abdomen c
Ask for a surgical opinion if there are signs of an acute abdomen - it may not be due to the crisis! c
