Bacterial meningitis

Mortality with bacterial meningitis is high. 

Note:

  • 19% to 27% of patients with bacterial meningitis die. b c More patients over 60 die (38%: 95% CI: 24% to 51%) a  
  • Fewer patients with meningococcal disease die. 6% to 7% a b . Mortality is highest in patients with meningococcaemia (11%) and lowest in patients with meningitis alone (4.2%). a
