Once your patient has been stable for several months, consider coronary artery bypass for patients with angina b

Why?

  • CABG reduces mortality in patients with heart failure and angina by 30% to 50%, and improves functional outcome, assessed as either improvement in ejection fraction or decrease in NYHA class. b
  • However 5% of patients aged < 60 with mild heart failure die from surgery, and 30% of patients aged > 70 with severe heart failure and a co-morbid condition die from surgery. b
  • There is not enough evidence to indicate whether functional status or survival improves in the absence of angina. b
