Moderate risk for DVT
-
Positive scan: DVT
-
Negative scan: Repeat the scan in one week and withhold anticoagulation.
-
If it is positive: DVT
-
If it is negative: no DVT
Why?
-
Few patients have a positive second scan. In a study that scanned again all patients with a first negative scan, only 0.9%, had a positive second scan and 0.06% developed further symptoms in the intervening week.

-
DVT is very rare if two scans are negative: 0.6% of patients with 2 negative ultrasounds a week apart develop a DVT in the next 3 months.
